“… Religion feeds on a broken spirit, and that’s why it tries to break your spirit the moment you come into contact with it. Submit. Obey. Do not question. … ‘Praise the Lord,’ or else. … Clergy are the only salesmen who don’t have to justify or prove any of the outrageous claims they make for the product they’re hustling, and this leaves them free to engage in the kind of open fraud which, in any other walk of life, would be a criminal offence.” – Pat Condell

Swallowing Snot May Offend Allah! November 2, 2008

I’ve been suffering from some nasty phlegm issues lately, related to a condition called LPR (Laryngopharyngeal Reflux).
The mucous just sits there, in the back of my throat, and I can’t expel it, no matter how hard I try. Not pretty, not sexy, and extremely frustrating! (I know, I know – too much information.)
Anyway, in searching for some relief, I came across the following on islamtoday.net:
Question:
“I was praying an obligatory prayer and I had mucous in my mouth out of nowhere. I became confused and swallowed. I was also fasting at the time. Please tell me if my prayer and my fast are valid.”
Answer by Sheikh Muhammad b. Sâlih al-`Uthaymîn:
“Phlegm and mucous that do not reach the mouth do not cause the fast to break. This is the only opinion expressed on the matter in the (Hanbalî) school of law. If the phlegm and mucous reach the mouth and then the person swallows it back down, there is disagreement among the scholars regarding whether it breaks the fast. One opinion is that it does break the fast. They compare swallowing phlegm and mucous to the activities of eating and drinking. The other opinion is that it does not break the fast. They regard phlegm and mucous to be comparable to saliva. Even if a person gathers saliva in his mouth and swallows it, this will not break his fast. In a case where the scholars are divided in their opinions, then the matter must be referred back to the Qur’ân and Sunnah. Since we are in doubt about whether ingesting phlegm and mucous invalidates the fast, we must consider that the default assumption in Islamic Law in the absence of other evidence is that it does not do so. Based on this default assumption, we would say that it does not break the fast.”
Answer by Sheikh `Abd Allah b. Jibrîn:
“As a general rule, it is forbidden to deliberately swallow mucous on account of its dirtiness. It does not matter whether it comes from of from the throat or from the nose. If someone brings phlegm up from his chest into his mouth and then swallows it again, then he has broken his fast, since he has swallowed a substance that he could have avoided swallowing. On the other hand, if mucus descends on its own to his throat and is swallowed along with his saliva, it will not invalidate his fast. Please note that whatever invalidates a fast in this regard also invalidates prayer.”
This is beyond insane!
Religious “scholars” have actually debated whether or not swallowing mucous invalidates a fast?
It’s a bodily function for goodness’ sake! Do they seriously think their omniscient Allah – if he existed – would give a rat’s ass about such inconsequential nonsense?
Come on people, wake up and get a brain!

“There is a difference between not respecting a person and not respecting their beliefs.” -Bill Maher
I agree with Bill.
Just because I think your belief in a god or gods is completely ridiculous and delusional, it doesn’t mean I disrespect you as a person for holding those beliefs.
It’s probably not your fault. More than likely, you were brainwashed as a child, and didn’t bother to question the nonsensical crap you were force-fed by your parents and clergy.
As everyone knows, organized religion has done more harm than good.
Please think for yourselves, people!

I’m firmly convinced that the people who love and worship this horrible deity have never actually read the Bible.
And those who have, must not have comprehended what they were reading.
I apologize for using so many quotes in this blog, but Richard Dawkins sums up my feelings better than I ever could…
“The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all of fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomanical, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully. Those of us schooled from infancy in his ways can become desensitized to their horror.”
Take these little girls, for instance—completely desensitized. But at least they’ve got it right; God does in fact hate homosexuals. The Bible says so.
Such a wonderful, loving guy, that Yahweh.

Many of you probably receive e-mails like the one I’ve copied below. And, hopefully, most of you are astute enough to recognize a scam when you see one.
On the other hand, those of you who are completely deluded by religion make perfect victims. The reasoning being: since you’ve already been scammed once, you are obviously an easy mark.
Have you fallen for something like this?…
One With Christ: It’s my pleasure to share my testimony with you, I am Rev Barrister Sam Obodo , the legal adviser to late Mr and Mrs Zech Joseph a Russian couple that lived in my Country U.K for 25 years before they died in auto crash at Totlenham court airpress way, They are good Christian, They so Dedicated to God but they had no child till they died. Throughout their stayed in the country, they acquired a lot of properties, house properties, etc. As their legal adviser, before their death, they Instructed me to write their WILL. Because they had no child, they dedicated their wealth to God. According to the WILL, the properties have to be sold and the money will be given out to a ministry for the work of God, Orphanages and less privileges ones. As Their legal adviser, all the documents for the Properties were in my care. They gave me the authority to sell the properties and give out the fund to the Ministries for the work of God. In short, I sold all the properties after their death, as they instructed and as matter of fact, after I sold all their properties, I realized more than Ten million, five hundred thousand US Dollars ($10.500,000,00), and what supposed to be the percentage interest of my right legal fee was firstly deducted by me out of the total amount realized from the sold properties, this was base on the initial agreement between me and the owner of the properties before their death. Therefore the total amount left to be invested into God’s work as instructed by the owner is Ten million, five hundred thousand US Dollars ($10.500,000,00) only. But Instead of giving the main fund out for the work of God as instructed to me by the owner before their death. I have intention of investing the fund in abroad for personal use. then packaged the fund and deposited it with a security Finance Firm. I did not want the management of the Security finance to know the content of the consignments; therefore I registered the content of the consignments as family treasure. Now, the security company believes that what I deposited with them was family treasure.I had encounter with Christ when Rev. Billy Graham was preaching on television concerning Amanas and Sapphire in Acts 5:1-11. After hearing the word of God, I gave my life to Christ and became a born again Christian. As a born again Christian, I started reading my bible and knowing who is God and becaome a Preacher in a Missionary, one day the Lord opened my eyes to Ezekiel 33: 18 and 19 where the word of God says: “When the righteous truth from his righteousness, and committed iniquity, he shall even die thereby. But if the wicked turn from his wickedness, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall live thereby”. From the scripture, I discovered that the only way I could have peace in my life is to do what is lawful and right by Giving out the fund as instructed for the work of God by the owner before her death. I have asked God for forgiveness and I know that God have forgiven me. But I have to do what is lawful and right in the sight of God by giving out the fund to the chosen ministry or charity eg: for the purpose of God’s work as instructed by the owner before her death. After my fasting and prayers, I asked God to make his choice and direct me to a honest Christian but after my fervent prayer over it, then you were nominated to me through divine revelation from God, so these are how I received such a divine revelation from the Lord, how I got your contact information, and I then decided to contact you for the fund to be used wisely for things that will glorify the name of God. I have notified the Security Company where I deposited the fund that I am moving the package to abroad and the security company has since been waiting for my authority for the consignment to leave my country and move to abroad. You should also forward to me your telephone and fax number for easy communication and to fax you the documents concern are in my position. Prompt response will be highly appreciated. Yours in Christ Barrister Sam Obodo
Bosnian Muslim Woman Tortured & Raped Daily, Believes “God” Kept Her Alive for a Reason July 22, 2008

Oh, give me a break!
What is wrong with you people?!
Obviously, there is no god. But if there were… why in the world would anyone with half a brain in their head worship such a masochistic, narcissistic psycho?
Here we have a woman who was raped and tortured every single day, for a year, by both men and women, had her breast sliced with a bayonet, and suffered unimaginable pain, suffering, and mental distress.
But she still believes her all loving, all powerful, all knowing, all merciful god allowed this to happen to her “for a reason.”
If so, her god must stand trial for crimes against humanity right along with Radovan Karadzic.
Here is an excerpt:
“Then they started torturing me. I lost consciousness. When I woke up I was totally naked and covered in blood and my sister-in-law was also naked and covered in blood. … I knew I had been raped and my sister-in-law too.” In a corner, she saw her mother-in-law, holding her children and crying.
“That same day we were locked in our house. That was the worst, the worst period of my whole life. That’s when it started.
“Every day we were raped. Not only in the house — they would also take us to the front line for the soldiers to torture us. Then again in the house, in front of the children,” Jasmina said through a translator, remembering the 10 other women who were brutalized with her.
“I was in such a bad condition that sometimes I couldn’t even recognize my own children. Even though I was in a very bad physical condition they had no mercy at all. They raped me every day. They took me to the soldiers and back to that house.
“The only conversation we had was when I was begging them to kill me. That’s when they laughed. Their response was ‘we don’t need you dead.’”
Once at the front line there were women soldiers who tortured her with a bottle and then slashed at her throat and wrist when it broke. Then the troops cut one of her breasts with a bayonet, said Jasmina, now looking older than her 35 years.
“It lasted for a year. Every day. … Not all the women survived.”
The following year, Jasmina tried to kill herself three times.
“I will never be OK,” she said. “I was beautiful once; it cost me my life.”
And why exactly did your god allow this to happen to you, Jasmina?
I’d love to hear his side of the story.

Court Convicts Man Who Says He Can Raise the Dead July 19, 2008

Grabovoy
All so-called “faith healers” are con artists.
Most are wealthy television evangelists who, inexplicably, get away with their crimes.
But, every once in a while, someone is actually charged and convicted of fraud.
Last week, for instance, a Moscow court sentenced Grigory Grabovoy to 11 years of hard labor in a Russian prison for claiming he could resurrect the dead.
Like all con men of his ilk, Grabovoy took advantage of people’s grief and desperation.
In one instance, a man paid the fraudster 39,500 roubles ($1,700) to cure his dying parents, and in another case, he took 118,000 roubles from a woman to resurrect her dead sons.
Grabovoy also promised to resurrect hundreds of children killed at a school siege in 2004. For a fee, of course.
Unfortunately, the gullible remain gullible.
Despite the guilty verdict, Grabovoy’s supporters still believe he has supernatural powers and that he has been unfairly persecuted.
I imagine if Jesus were alive today, he too would be convicted of fraud, or, at the very least, committed to a psychiatric hospital.
Actually, according to the Christian mythologists, Jesus was convicted and sentenced to death. And yet, over 2000 years later, the deluded still believe their crazy hero was divine.

The Power of Prayer July 1, 2008

“The savage prays to a stone that he calls a god, while the Christian prays to a god he calls a spirit, and the prayers of both are equally useful.” –Robert G. Ingersoll
“Two hands working can do more than a thousand clasped in prayer.” –Author Unknown
A study monitoring the “power of prayer” studied 1,802 patients (at six different hospitals) who’d received coronary bypass surgery.
The patients were broken into three groups.
Two were prayed for; the third was not.
Half the patients were told they were being prayed for; half were told they might or might not receive prayers.
The researchers then asked the members of three congregations to pray for the patients.
The folks delivering the prayers were told to pray any way they wished, as long as they included the phrase: “for a successful surgery with a quick, healthy recovery and no complications.”
Thirty days after the operations, the researchers found no difference between those patients who were prayed for and those who were not.
However, a significantly higher number of the patients who knew that they were being prayed for suffered complications.
Similarly, another study involving 40 alcoholics in rehabilitation, found that men and women who knew they were being prayed for actually fared worse.
